This is where we (at Grassroutes) are based out of. For the past one year we have been working on the web, building GR. It has been a wonderful experience so far. Starting your venture is challenging and when 8 people operate from 6 different cities it makes the journey all the more unique and novel.
There have been many challenges and at times distance was frustrating. One of the challenges working online has been to get every small piece well documented, so that all of us are on the same page. There have been times when we debated on the wording on of the document as each of us got a different understanding of it. Documentation as boring and bugging it may sound is very critical.
Brainstorming on the web is tricky, as it is tough to communicate your idea to the other person sitting thousands of miles away. But I have found that it has worked to our advantage as each of us brings in fresh perspectives. Due to the distance each of us is not biased going in to a discussion. All of us bring in our own thoughts, which makes these sessions very lively and productive.
Processes differentiate good and great organisations, but for an organisation on the web it is the lifeline which keeps it going. We are still in the process of defining most of these and trying to modify the ones that are there for offline/on-ground organisations.
Having said all that, in ideal world we all would love to operate from one place. But in this real world, web has put us on a road towards that ideal world.
